Since 1996 the University has obtained the majority of its electricity, heat, and chilled water, from a combined heat and power plant (CHP).
The plant, known as the Generating Station Complex is shared with the adjacent Leeds Teaching Hospitals site. It generates more than 50 MW of steam, in addition to electrical power, hot water and compressed air for the two sites.
In 2016 the University of Leeds and Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust invested £27M to have the plant refurbished so that it can continue supplying energy for the next 30 years.
