SSEN seeks businesses to take part in flexibility market trials

7 May 2021

Interested in being paid to take part in innovative energy market trials in Oxfordshire that will help shape the energy systems of the future?

Is your business committed to playing a part in meeting the Country’s aims for net-zero?

As the Distributed Network Operator in your area, SSEN is reaching out to business that may have the potential to benefit from taking part in flexibility market trials starting in October 2021. As well as offering you a new revenue source it is an opportunity to take part in TRANSITION - one of the most innovative energy projects in the UK supporting the move to carbon-zero. TRANSITION will be running market trials for local flexible energy over the next two years. An asset is flexible if it can be turned up (in the case of a generator) or down (in the case of your consumption) on demand, in order to most effectively balance your local energy network.

Who is eligible to take part?

  • The total of the capacity of your combined flexibility assets must be 50kW or more – this could be generation, batteries or a system or process you can turn down to reduce your demand on the network (demand side response).
  • You need to be able to ‘turn on, up or down’ on demand.
  • Your asset needs to be in one of the trial areas in Oxfordshire. You can check this on the website https://ssen-transition.com/get-involved/our-trial-areas/

What could I earn by taking part?

As this is a trial project the rates will differ to SSEN’s ‘business as usual’ flexibility payments. Earnings will depend on the asset or assets you have and the markets you take part in. You could however be paid up to £500/MWh for participation in the trials. Check out the website to find out about the Market Stimulation Packages too which simplify participation and give you a fixed price for participation.

As well as flexibility being traded in the trials with the network/systems operator SSEN are also running peer to peer trials and will have more information on their website soon.

So, if you want to join other Oxfordshire businesses working together to drive Oxfordshire to net zero then please visit the TRANSITION project website www.ssen-transition.com/get-involved/.
