E.ON - Blackburn Meadows

Home to Sheffield’s iconic Tinsley cooling towers, Blackburn Meadows has been transformed from a coal-fired relic into a clean heat and power plant. Since 2015, this biomass plant has turned recycled UK waste wood into power, generating enough electricity for almost 69,000 homes and businesses. It also provides low-carbon heat to major local employers like IKEA and Forgemasters via a heat network, cutting emissions by 65% compared to gas. Beyond energy, it’s a community asset, funding outdoor education for thousands of children and supporting local projects.
